Whenever I make a dress that is super themed or Buttons sees fabric, that is busy or themed, that she wants to make a dress out of we tend to say "This is my Ms. Frizzle dress" or "This would make an awesome Ms. Frizzle dress". So I had a thought! We should make a Ms Frizzle dress for every month of the year! How exciting would that be? Can you imagine my wardrobe by the end of the year?
This whole project idea is still being tossed around by us. We don't even know what to call it!
What do you think?
I would really like it if people were involved! I would just love it if people came up with their own dresses and posted pictures so we could see. We also had the idea that some months we might do a little contest and people can submit their drawing ideas for the upcoming dress and we could make it! Or even Pru had the idea that the winner could win a dress. I really am not sure yet. We will figure out the details.
For me, I am doing this because I want to work on my detail. I want to learn to paint on fabric, bead fabric, do patch work on fabric, those sort of details. And I just want some crazy wonderful dresses that are like art work!
So I decided I am going to use one pattern for the whole year. I got a mix and match pattern with short and longer sleeve options. Shortening and lengthening the skirt is no biggy with any pattern but I really wanted one with pockets! And I found the perfect one Simplicity 1803.
So for January I didn't quite know what I wanted I had a few ideas maybe a winter theme or maybe a new year theme. But then I realized it is Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday in January so I decided that that was it! As soon as I decided on it the idea of the dress came to me instantly. And it turned out perfectly!
|Martin Luther King Jr Dress with the "I Have a Dream" speech|
I hand painted (with fabric paint) MLK Jr on. I really wanted to use a stencil but I just couldn't find one where he was talking! So I had to free hand it and let me tell you what I almost had a heart attack. It took a lot of courage to put that paint brush on a perfectly good and brand new dress!
I used transfer paper to put the words on. They are the words to the 'I Have a Dream' speech. If you have never read that speech I really recommend that you do, making this dress was the first time I had read it and it really is a wonderful speech. MLK Jr. really was a great man. If it wasn't for people like him people like me and Pru wouldn't exist. Both of us have one black and one white parent and they would have never been able to marry! It is just crazy to think about. My mom says we would have existed but it would have been very difficult for us. When I was growing up people us to tell us that some of the world was still like that but I never believed them because I grew up in a bubble of such diverse culture. It wasn't until I moved to a small predominantly white community when I first experienced racism. It just blows my mind that in this day and age there are still people like that!
Back on subject! I had been eyeing these buttons for awhile and now I finally had the perfect project for them.
The dress has the secret pockets in the front, like a crotch pocket and the whole dress is lined with black.
P.S. Please, please, please help me name this project!
